Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind by division. Written as a : b, it tells us how many times one quantity contains the other — not their absolute values.
Key Properties
- Order matters: a : b is generally not equal to b : a.
- Same units: Convert both quantities to the same unit before forming a ratio.
- Simplest form: Divide both terms by their HCF. Example: 24 : 36 = 2 : 3.
- No unit in the final ratio: Units cancel when both terms share the same unit.
Part-to-Part vs Part-to-Whole
If boys : girls = 4 : 5, the whole class has 4 + 5 = 9 equal parts. Boys are 4/9 of the total and girls are 5/9 of the total.
Converting Ratio to Actual Numbers
If a : b = 3 : 5, write the quantities as 3k and 5k for some constant k. Use the given total, difference, or one actual value to find k.
Example: Ratio 3 : 5 and total 40 → 3k + 5k = 40 → k = 5 → numbers are 15 and 25.
Three-Term Ratios
For a : b : c, use ak, bk, and ck. Sum of parts = (a + b + c)k.
Placement Shortcut
To divide amount M in ratio a : b, first share = M × a/(a + b) and second share = M × b/(a + b).

Q1 EasyIn a placement aptitude drill, two quantities are in the ratio 5 : 7 and their sum is 144. What is the smaller quantity?Explanation5k + 7k = 144 → k = 12. Smaller quantity = 5k = 60.
-
Q2 EasyExpress the ratio of 75 paise to Rs. 3 in simplest form.ExplanationRs. 3 = 300 paise. Ratio = 75 : 300 = 1 : 4.
-
Q3 EasyIf a : b = 5 : 7 and b = 28, what is the value of a?Explanationa/28 = 5/7 → a = 20.
-
Q4 EasyWhat is the ratio 84 : 126 in its simplest form?ExplanationHCF of 84 and 126 is 42. Dividing both terms gives 2 : 3.
-
Q5 MediumTwo numbers are respectively 20% and 50% more than a third number. The ratio of the two numbers is:ExplanationLet the third number be 100. Then the two numbers are 120 and 150. Required ratio = 120 : 150 = 4 : 5.
-
Q6 MediumA sum of money is to be distributed among A, B, C, D in the proportion of 5 : 2 : 4 : 3. If C gets Rs. 1000 more than D, what is B's share?ExplanationC − D = 1 part = Rs. 1000. B gets 2 parts = Rs. 2000.
-
Q7 MediumThe ratio of the number of boys and girls in a college is 7 : 8. If the percentage increase in the number of boys and girls be 20% and 10% respectively, what will be the new ratio?ExplanationNew boys : girls = 7×1.2 : 8×1.1 = 8.4 : 8.8 = 21 : 22.
-
Q8 MediumThree numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. If the sum of the three numbers is 120, what is the largest number?Explanation2k + 3k + 5k = 120 → k = 12. Largest = 5k = 60.
-
Q9 MediumThe ratio of boys to girls in a class is 4 : 5. If there are 108 students in all, how many girls are there?ExplanationGirls = 108 × 5/9 = 60.
-
Q10 MediumTwo numbers are in the ratio 7 : 9 and their difference is 16. What is the larger number?Explanation2k = 16 → k = 8. Larger number = 9k = 72.
-
Q11 MediumAn amount of Rs. 720 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. What is B's share?ExplanationB gets 3 parts out of 9. Share = 720 × 3/9 = Rs. 240.
-
Q12 HardSeats for Mathematics, Physics and Biology in a school are in the ratio 5 : 7 : 8. There is a proposal to increase these seats by 40%, 50% and 75% respectively. What will be the ratio of increased seats?ExplanationNew seats = 5×1.4 : 7×1.5 : 8×1.75 = 7 : 10.5 : 14 = 2 : 3 : 4.
-
Q13 HardIf A : B = 2 : 3, B : C = 4 : 5 and C : D = 6 : 7, then A : B : C : D is:ExplanationA:B = 2:3; B:C = 4:5 → A:B:C = 8:12:15. C:D = 6:7 → multiply by 2: A:B:C:D = 16:24:30:35.
-
Q14 HardThe salaries of A, B, C are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. If the increments of 15%, 10% and 20% are allowed respectively in their salaries, then what will be the new ratio of their salaries?ExplanationNew ratio = 2×1.15 : 3×1.10 : 5×1.20 = 2.3 : 3.3 : 6 = 23 : 33 : 60.

DS1 Easy
What is the first number?
Statement IThe two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 4 and their sum is 98.
Statement IIThe second number exceeds the first by 14.
ExplanationStatement I: 3k + 4k = 98 → k = 14 → first = 42. Statement II: k = 14 → first = 42. Each alone is sufficient. -
DS2 Medium
In a quantitative screening, candidates must simplify a ratio. What is the ratio of the two quantities in simplest form?
Statement IThe quantities are 48 and 72.
Statement IIThe HCF of the two quantities is 24.
ExplanationStatement I alone gives 48 : 72 = 2 : 3. Statement II gives the HCF but not the actual quantities.
-
DS3 Medium
A placement trainer asks for the total of two quantities. What is the total of the two quantities?
Statement IThe quantities are in the ratio 2 : 3.
Statement IIThe difference between the quantities is 15.
ExplanationTogether: 3k − 2k = 15 → k = 15, total = 5k = 75. Neither alone is sufficient. -
DS4 Hard
During a mock interview quantitative round, is the ratio of the first quantity to the second greater than 1 : 1?
Statement IThe first quantity is 56.
Statement IIThe second quantity is 48.
ExplanationTogether, ratio = 56 : 48 = 7 : 6 > 1 : 1. Both statements are needed.
