Concept Explanation

Circular-arrangement questions place people around a round table, usually facing the centre or facing outward. You use clockwise/anticlockwise neighbours, opposite seats, and “2nd to the right/left” counts to fix the full circle or answer who sits where.

Rules to remember

  • Facing the centre: in most placement sets, “immediate right” means the next seat clockwise (each person’s right hand).
  • Facing outward: left and right swap — immediate right becomes the anticlockwise seat.
  • Opposite (even n): in n seats, opposite means n/2 steps away (e.g. in 8, seat 1 ↔ seat 5).
  • Odd n: no seat is exactly opposite another.
  • Between A and B (clockwise): count seats strictly on the clockwise arc, excluding A and B.

How to solve fast

  1. Fix one person at seat 1, then apply clockwise moves.
  2. Place “opposite” pairs first in even-sized circles.
  3. Convert “kth to the right/left” into a seat number before counting between.
