Concept Explanation

Classification items give four options. Three share the same category, rule, or context; one does not. Your job is to spot the odd one out by grouping the other three first.

How to classify quickly

  • Try a simple label: all fruits? all capitals? all prime numbers?
  • Test each option against that label; the one that fails is the answer.
  • Watch for near-misses (e.g. Moon vs planets, monitor vs input devices).

Common group types in placement papers

  • Living things, geography, science, numbers, grammar (noun/verb), sports, professions
  • Units (length vs volume), symbols, parts of a machine

How to solve fast

  1. Find what three options have in common in one short phrase.
  2. Pick the option that breaks that phrase.
  3. Re-check that the other three really fit the same rule.
