Concept Explanation

Alphabet series questions use the English alphabet in order (A to Z) with a fixed rule: skip letters, reverse direction, pair letters, or group them into blocks. Treat each letter as a position (A = 1, B = 2, …, Z = 26) when the pattern is numeric.

Common patterns

  • Constant step: move forward or backward by the same number of letters (+2, +3, −3).
  • Changing step: differences increase (+2, +3, +4, …) or alternate two rules.
  • Mirror / pairing: AZ, BY, CX … or A, Z, B, Y from both ends.
  • Blocks: AB, CD, EF … or ABC, DEF, GHI …
  • Reverse blocks: PON, MLK, JIH …

How to solve fast

  1. Write the gap between consecutive letters (in positions or count of skipped letters).
  2. Check odd vs even positions if a single rule does not fit.
  3. For pairs or triplets, apply the rule inside each group first, then between groups.
