Concept Explanation

Seating-arrangement questions place people in a linear row (usually facing North or South). You use fixed positions (left/right, 1st from an end), adjacency (immediate left/right), and between clues to build the full order or answer who sits where.

Rules to remember

  • Facing North: left and right match the usual left-to-right row you draw.
  • Facing South: each person’s left/right is reversed from your view; read “from the sitters’ point of view” carefully.
  • Rank in row: kth from the right in n seats → seat (n − k + 1) from the left.
  • Between two seats i and j (i < j): count = j − i − 1.
  • Ends and middle: in 5 seats, middle is 3rd; in 6 seats there are two centre seats (3rd and 4th).

How to solve fast

  1. Fix ends or given positions first; fill “immediate left/right” and “between” blocks next.
  2. When only left/right ranks are given, convert both to seat numbers from one side.
  3. Cross-check that “not at end” and “not adjacent” rules are satisfied before picking an option.
