Concept Explanation

Analogy questions show a relationship between two things and ask you to find the same relationship for another pair. Format is often “A is to B as C is to ___?” — the missing word must match the type of link (part–whole, tool–action, profession–workplace, number pattern, letter shift, etc.).

Common relationship types

  • Functional: pen : write :: knife : cut
  • Category / member: puppy : dog :: kitten : cat
  • Whole–part: window : pane :: book : page
  • Geography / capital: France : Paris :: Japan : Tokyo
  • Numeric: square, cube, multiply-by-n between pairs
  • Alphabet: fixed shift, reverse, or pair-wise move on letters

How to solve fast

  1. State the first pair in a short sentence (“A does/is/has B”).
  2. Apply the same rule to the third term to predict the fourth.
  3. Check every option; reject same-topic but wrong relationship (e.g. coop for dog).
