Concept Explanation

Linear-arrangement questions use a single straight row (often facing North or South). You combine fixed positions, adjacency, order chains (A left of B), and sometimes two parallel rows facing each other to find who sits where.

Rules to remember

  • One row, facing North: left/right in the question usually matches a left-to-right diagram.
  • Facing South: a sitter’s left/right is reversed from your view — read whether the clue is from the sitter’s or observer’s side.
  • Two rows: 1st from the left in Row I sits opposite 1st from the left in Row II when left ends align.
  • Convert ranks: kth from the right in n seats → seat (n − k + 1) from the left.

How to solve fast

  1. Anchor ends, centre, or given ranks first.
  2. Place “immediate left/right” and “between” blocks; then fill order chains.
  3. For parallel rows, match positions from the same end before reading opposites.
