Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
Bar graphs compare quantities using bars whose lengths (or heights) represent values. Read the scale on the axis carefully.
How to Read Bar Graphs
- Check whether bars are vertical or horizontal.
- Note the scale interval (e.g., each grid line = 10 units).
- Compare bar heights for maximum, minimum, and differences.
Key Formulas
- Total = sum of all bar values.
- Ratio = value A : value B in simplest form.
- % change = (change ÷ original) × 100.
Example
Bars for Mon–Wed: 50, 80, 70. Total = 200. Wed is 10 more than Mon.
Common Trap
A bar starting above zero on a truncated axis can look much taller than it really is—always read numeric labels.
-
Q1 EasyStacked bars: Base = 60, Top = 40 for one category. Total bar height is:Explanation60 + 40 = 100. Hence the answer is 100.
-
Q2 EasyA bar graph shows Mon = 50, Tue = 80, Wed = 70 units. Total for three days is:Explanation50 + 80 + 70 = 200. Hence the answer is 200.
-
Q3 EasyFour bars read 40, 60, 80, 100. The tallest bar is:Explanation100 is the maximum. Hence the answer is 100.
-
Q4 EasyBars: P = 90, Q = 60. Ratio P : Q is:Explanation90 : 60 = 3 : 2. Hence the answer is 3 : 2.
-
Q5 EasyAverage of bar values 30, 50, 70 is:Explanation(30 + 50 + 70)/3 = 150/3 = 50. Hence the answer is 50.
-
Q6 EasyBars for City A = 120 and City B = 180 (Rs. lakhs). City B exceeds City A by:Explanation180 − 120 = 60 lakhs. Hence the answer is 60.
-
Q7 MediumIf bar X = 45 and total of 5 equal bars is 225, each of the other four bars is:ExplanationOther four sum = 180; if equal, each = 45. Hence the answer is 45.
-
Q8 MediumBars for 4 quarters: 100, 120, 140, 160. Average quarterly value is:Explanation(100+120+140+160)/4 = 520/4 = 130. Hence the answer is 130.
-
Q9 MediumBar A = 75, Bar B = 125. Combined they are what % of total 400?Explanation(75+125)/400 = 200/400 = 50%. Hence the answer is 50%.
-
Q10 Medium2019 bar = 200, 2020 bar = 250. Percentage increase is:Explanation(50/200) × 100 = 25%. Hence the answer is 25%.
-
Q11 MediumBars: Jan = 100, Feb = 150, Mar = 150. Feb is what % of the three-month total?ExplanationTotal = 400. Feb share = (150/400) × 100 = 37.5%. Hence the answer is 37.5%.
-
Q12 MediumTwo bars 64 and 96. Smaller is what % of larger?Explanation(64/96) × 100 = 66.67%. Hence the answer is 66.67%.
-
Q13 HardBars read 85, 102, 119, 136 (scale +17 each year). The pattern increase per step is:ExplanationEach consecutive difference is 17. Hence the answer is 17.
-
Q14 Hard2018 = 160, 2019 = 200, 2020 = 240. Highest year-on-year absolute increase is:Explanation2018–2019: +40; 2019–2020: +40. Both equal. Hence the answer is Both equal.

DS1 Easy
What is the total of three daily bar values?
Statement IMon = 50, Tue = 80, Wed = 70.
Statement IIThe average of the three days is 66.67.
ExplanationStatement I alone: total = 200. Statement II alone: total = 3 × 66.67 ≈ 200 but less direct. Answer: A. -
DS2 Easy
What is the ratio of the two tallest bars?
Statement IBar heights are 90 and 60.
Statement IIThe taller bar is 1.5 times the shorter.
ExplanationEach alone gives ratio 90 : 60 = 3 : 2. Answer: D.
-
DS3 Easy
What is the average of four quarterly bars?
Statement IQ1 = 100, Q2 = 120, Q3 = 140, Q4 = 160.
Statement IIThe sum of the four quarters is 520.
ExplanationStatement I alone: average = 130. Statement II alone: average = 520/4 = 130 if four quarters are known. Answer: A. -
DS4 Medium
What is the percentage increase from 2019 to 2020?
Statement I2019 = 200 and 2020 = 250.
Statement IIThe increase is 50 units.
ExplanationNeed both base and new value: (50/200) × 100 = 25%. Answer: C.
