Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
When two articles with different cost prices and profit percentages are mixed, the overall profit on the mixture is a weighted average of individual profits based on their cost contributions.
Key Formulas
- SP = CP × (1 + profit%/100)
- Mean profit % on mix = (C1P1 + C2P2) / (C1 + C2) when CP is the weight
- Overall SP of mix = total SP / total quantity
Example
10 kg at 20% profit (CP Rs. 100/kg) and 10 kg at 40% profit (CP Rs. 100/kg). Mean profit = (20 + 40)/2 = 30%.
Common Trap
Profit percentages combine by cost weight, not by simple average, when quantities differ.
-
Q1 EasyA dishonest dealer uses a false weight of 900 g for 1 kg and claims to sell at cost price. His gain percent is:ExplanationGain% = ((1000 − 900)/900) × 100 = 100/900 × 100 = 100/9 = 11 1/9%. Hence the answer is 11 1/9%.
-
Q2 EasyA mixture of 40 kg costs Rs. 2400 and is sold at Rs. 72/kg. Profit percent on the mixture is:ExplanationCP per kg = 2400/40 = Rs. 60. SP = Rs. 72. Profit% = (12/60) × 100 = 20%. Hence the answer is 20%.
-
Q3 EasyEqual quantities of two articles (same CP) are sold at 10% profit and 30% profit. Overall profit percent is:ExplanationEqual cost weights: mean profit% = (10 + 30)/2 = 20%. Hence the answer is 20%.
-
Q4 MediumA dishonest dealer professes to sell his goods at cost price, but uses a weight of 960 grams for a kg weight. Find his gain percent.ExplanationHe charges for 1000 g but gives only 960 g. Gain on true cost of 960 g = 40 g. Gain% = (40/960) × 100 = 4000/960 = 25/6 = 4 1/6%. Hence the answer is 4 1/6%.
-
Q5 MediumA merchant mixes two varieties of rice costing Rs. 20 and Rs. 30 per kg and sells the mixture at Rs. 27/kg making 8% profit. The ratio of mixing (cheaper : dearer) is:ExplanationSP = Rs. 27/kg at 8% profit ⇒ mean CP = 27 × 100/108 = Rs. 25/kg. By alligation, cheaper : dearer = (30 − 25) : (25 − 20) = 5 : 5 = 1 : 1. Hence the answer is 1 : 1.
-
Q6 MediumWater is mixed with milk to gain 20% by selling the mixture at cost price. The ratio of milk to water is:ExplanationLet CP of pure milk be Rs. 1/L. Mixture is sold at Rs. 1/L with 20% gain ⇒ CP of mixture = 1/1.2 = 5/6 per litre. Alligation between milk (Rs. 1) and water (Rs. 0): milk : water = (5/6 − 0) : (1 − 5/6) = (5/6) : (1/6) = 5 : 1. Hence the answer is 5 : 1.
-
Q7 MediumA shopkeeper mixes two oils costing Rs. 40/L and Rs. 70/L and sells the mixture at Rs. 60/L making 20% profit. Ratio cheaper : dearer is:ExplanationMean CP = 60 × 100 / 120 = Rs. 50/L. Alligation: cheaper : dearer = (70 − 50) : (50 − 40) = 20 : 10 = 2 : 1. Hence the answer is 2 : 1.
-
Q8 MediumA dealer buys wheat at Rs. 30/kg and Rs. 50/kg, mixes them, and sells at Rs. 44/kg for 10% profit. The mixing ratio (cheaper : dearer) is:ExplanationMean CP = 44 × 100 / 110 = Rs. 40/kg. Alligation: cheaper : dearer = (50 − 40) : (40 − 30) = 10 : 10 = 1 : 1. Hence the answer is 1 : 1.
-
Q9 MediumMilk costing Rs. 40/L is mixed with water and sold at Rs. 40/L for 25% profit. Milk : water is:ExplanationSold at CP of milk with 25% gain ⇒ CP of mixture = 40/1.25 = Rs. 32/L. Alligation: milk (40) and water (0) for mean 32: milk : water = 32 : (40 − 32) = 32 : 8 = 4 : 1. Hence the answer is 4 : 1.
-
Q10 HardBy mixing two brands of tea A and B costing Rs. 40 and Rs. 50, and selling the mixture at Rs. 46/kg with 15% profit, find the ratio A : B.ExplanationMean CP of mixture = 46 × 100/115 = Rs. 40/kg. Alligation: A : B = (50 − 40) : (40 − 40) = 10 : 0. So only brand A is used (ratio A : B = 1 : 0). Hence the answer is 1 : 0 (only A).
-
Q11 HardCP of a mixture is Rs. 60/kg and it is sold at Rs. 72/kg gaining 20%. If pure costs Rs. 80/kg, the quantity of the cheaper variety (Rs. 40/kg) in 100 kg of mixture is:ExplanationCheck: SP 72 at 20% profit ⇒ CP = 72/1.2 = Rs. 60/kg (consistent). Alligation: cheaper : dearer = (80 − 60) : (60 − 40) = 20 : 20 = 1 : 1. In 100 kg, cheaper = 50 kg. Hence the answer is 50 kg.
-
Q12 HardTwo types of sugar at Rs. 35/kg and Rs. 55/kg are mixed and sold at Rs. 48/kg for 20% profit. Ratio cheaper : dearer is:ExplanationMean CP = 48 × 100/120 = Rs. 40/kg. Alligation: cheaper : dearer = (55 − 40) : (40 − 35) = 15 : 5 = 3 : 1. Hence the answer is 3 : 1.
-
Q13 HardA vendor mixes 3 kg of rice at Rs. 24/kg with 5 kg at Rs. 36/kg and sells the mixture at 25% profit. Selling price per kg is:ExplanationMean CP = (3×24 + 5×36)/8 = (72 + 180)/8 = 252/8 = Rs. 31.50/kg. SP = 31.50 × 1.25 = Rs. 39.375/kg. Hence the answer is Rs. 39.375.
-
Q14 HardA false weight of 800 g is used for 1 kg while selling at 10% profit on CP. Effective gain percent is:ExplanationTrue gain factor = (1000/800) × 1.10 = 1.25 × 1.10 = 1.375. Gain% = 37.5%. Alternatively: CP of 800 g = 0.8C; SP charged = 1.1C; profit = 0.3C; profit% = 0.3C/0.8C × 100 = 37.5%. Hence the answer is 37.5%.
