In this tutorial, we will learn to write the program in C to check whether a given year is a leap year or not? This program required some knowledge of leap year to build the logic.
So let’s know first about the leap year.
What is Leap year?
A Leap year is a calendar year where one extra day is added in the month of february. Every 4th year the February month contains 29 days that making a year 366 days. And rest year which is not a leap contains 365 days.
Technically the year number is divided by four if it is not the century is a leap year. And if the year is a century, must be divisible by 400 to become a leap year.
Let’s see an Example
- 2004, 2008, 2012 are the leap year because it is divided by 4 and are not a century.
- 2000 is the leap year because it is divisible by 400 but 1900 is not because it is not divisible by 400. Here we are dividing by 400 because they are a century.
C Program to check a given year is leap year or not
#include <stdio.h>
int main() {
int year;
printf("Program to find given year is leap or not\n");
printf("Please Enter a year: ");
scanf("%d", &year);
if (year % 400 == 0) {
printf("Given year %d is a leap year.", year);
}
else if (year % 100 == 0) {
printf("Given year %d is not a leap year.", year);
}
else if (year % 4 == 0) {
printf("Given year %d is a leap year.", year);
}
else {
printf("Given year %d is not a leap year.", year);
}
return 0;
}
Output
Program to find given year is leap or not
Please Enter a year: 2022
Given year 2022 is not a leap year.
